Welcome back for another Photoshop CS5 Tutorial. This time I had to bust out a bunch of Photoshop rendered illustrations for some toy packaging. Several people were interested in the process, so watch and learn this technique to 1up your skills! It’s about 15 minutes and packed with savory goodness! Anyway, I worked with my friend Tony Maldonado on this job, and it was super fun! Tony drew the flats in Illustrator, and sent them to me to paint up some magic. Check out the characters we did below. Also here are some links to Tonys work, he’s got some GREAT character art! Enjoy!

Type Choices…

So currently I have a quick design to the book package that needs to be refined. Thinking about the graphic design and layout of the book, the actual feel of the book and the LOOK of the book I am researching the Fonts and Type. Currently I am using these:

Museo Slab - MyFonts – LogoType. This font is kinda trendy, but strong, fun and even kinda sleek to some degree. I used this to massage into a simple logo- the one that you see in the mockups. It still has work to be done on it though.
Millar - T26 – Body Copy or subtext. This font is fun since it is from the Sega Master System. So it is contemporary and a throw back. The smoothness compliments the Museo by adding contrast. I dunno, I think it fits, but will have to explore more with some treatments and see if any magic happens. In any case, I want the book to have a modern feel, but also a sexy retro look too. *scratches head

Moving on! I asked my friend Ashley at Ink Spot Chicago to do a quick test on some heavy card stock paper for the project. I was thinking for the “thank you” card for the backers. Print quality was pretty good, weight of the paper was pretty good, the texture and feel of the paper…well not what I am looking for. So we have to find a nice paper to get what I want. And I get what I want. Thanks Ashley!
